Fleetwood 'excited' about PSU offer
With a glaring need at safety, the Penn State coaching staff decided to verbally offer another defensive back on Monday. This time it was Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson safety Kyle Fleetwood, and although he may be from the south, it looks like the 5-foot-11, 200 pound safety has legitimate interest in the Nittany Lions.
"I'm really excited about it," Fleetwood said. "I haven't talked to any of the coaches yet, I haven't gotten a minute to do that, I've been getting ready for (spring) football which is coming up. I plan on talking to him soon, I have his number, so definitely in a few days at the most, hopefully tonight or tomorrow.
Penn State defensive back coach Kermit Buggs is in-charge of Fleetwood's recruitment, as he is with most Georgia players. Fleetwood said Buggs had some great things to say to Stephenson head coach Ron Gartrell.
"My coach said that coach Buggs said something about having two safeties leaving after this year, so if I were to play there, I'd have a chance to play early in my career, possibly sometime as a freshman.
"That definitely would be a good time, I was excited to hear that."
Growing up down south, Fleetwood knows all about the SEC, but he's familiar with what Penn State has to offer as well.
"I know Penn State has great tradition up there, they're always on TV. They play great football, every time I watch their highlights on College Gameday or Sports Center, you always see a lot of fan support. It just seems like a great place to play football overall, any football player would want to play in Happy Valley.
"It just looks like a great environment and I think any football player would enjoy playing in that type of environment, especially me. I actually want to play at a school that's big in football tradition, so that's definitely key in what school I want to attend."
So what other schools are showing interest and where has Fleetwood visited so far?
"Vanderbilt has been recruiting me for a while, they were actually my first offer. South Carolina is recruiting heavily, Stanford's recruiting pretty heavily, LSU, Cincinnati, Louisville, there is a lot of schools recruiting heavily.
"My last visit I took was a while back, during spring break actually. A few teammates and I made a quick trip to South Florida. We all picked up offers from them so we decided to make a quick trip down there."
Stephensen begins spring practice on Wednesday. Following the conclusion of that at the end of the month, Fleetwood plans on visiting multiple schools. As for what he'll be looking for, Fleetwood says academics will be important.
"Academics will definitely play an important part in my decision as well. I want to go to a good school. Most importantly, college is about education, so I want to make sure I graduate with a good education and go to a school that's going to help me and guide me throughout my career."
