South Dakota star hearing from Spartans
One of the fastest rising prospects that many on the recruiting scene are unaware of is Nathan Gerry of Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. SpartanMag.com caught up with the fast rising recruit and got the latest details.
Earlier this spring SpartanMag.com posted on the UnderGround Bunkerthat Gerry was a prospect that could become a hot commodity in the coming months. Not only did we have information that Michigan State staff was recruiting him, but based on our research and film evaluation we saw a lot of upside potential. At that particular time, Gerry only had Football Championship Subdivision offers.
A few weeks ago Gerry attended an Under Amour Combine that was held at the University of Nebraska. At that event he showed those in attendance that he definitely has Division 1 athletic ability. Recruiting Analyst Sean Callahan of HuskerOnline.com had the following to report on Gerry's performance.
"Gerry had the best overall broad jump mark at 10-7, finished second in the 20 yard dash at 2.43 seconds, sixth in the vertical at 33 inches to go along with 17 reps of 185 pounds in the bench press. Gerry was outstanding in all of the individual skill drills."
The 10-7 broad jump is one of the best numbers we have seen reported in our coverage of recruiting for over a decade. Every year only a handful of the hundreds of players that attend Michigan State's Camp are able to crack the 10-foot mark. The most recent player we remember putting up a similar mark is current Spartan linebacker Chris Norman.
SpartanMag.com spoke with Gerry and got the latest information on his current list of scholarship offers and the additional schools that are showing him a significant amount of interest.
"I have offers from Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and South Dakota State," he said. "I am also hearing from Michigan State and Arizona State. Coach (Brad) Salem said he is coming down soon."
Gerry has not been to Michigan State yet, but if he receives a scholarship he would most likely take a trip to East Lansing to learn more about the Spartan program, We asked him about that and what he is looking for in a school.
Coach Salem said they need to see me in person before they offer," Gerry said. "I am looking for a school where I really like the environment and the coaches."
Michigan State likes to have players on campus before they offer, but they have offered several out of state players they deem as high-level prospects. It is possible that once Coach Salem sees Gerry in person an offer from Coach Dantonio could come shortly afterwards. Coaches are able to observe prospect participate in spring sports or workouts. That is how the Spartan came to offer cornerback Ezra Robinson last year.
Gerry is listed as an athlete recruit in the rivals.com database. In his highlight film he is seen making plays on both sides of the ball as well as special teams. We asked him about his current size and the position teams like him as.
"I am 6-foot-2, 206-pounds," Gerry said. "Teams are recruiting me as a safety. I pattern my style of play from that position after Matt Hermanson of Montana"
Hermanson is a sophomore who plays for the University of Montana. He attended Washington High School with Gerry and last fall as a freshmen started 13 games for the Grizzlies.
Based on the depth chart and current scholarships extended it is obvious that Michigan State wants to add a big hitting safety to this class. Gerry is another example of the Spartans staff doing an excellent job of evaluation.
