Franklin enjoys visit to State

This past weekend 3-star offensive tackle Eric Franklin of Youngstown Cardinal Mooney High School traveled to East Lansing High School to check out the Michigan State University. Spartanmag.com caught up with the 6-foot-7, 300-pound prospect and got some details on his recruitment.

Head Coach Mark Dantonio and his staff hosted numerous top prospects on campus last weekend, one of the biggest, both literally and figuratively, was Franklin. The offensive tackle prospect already has a Michigan State scholarship offer in hand and is taking a close look at the Spartans. The visit to Michigan State was Franklin's second this fall; he was also on campus for the Central Michigan game.

We asked Franklin about the team that he is hearing from and has offers from.

"Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Iowa State, Purdue, Louisville, Kansas, Toledo, Akron, Ball State and Ohio University. The majority of those schools have offered me a scholarship."

Michigan State already has two offensive line commitments from the state of Ohio and is looking to add at least one more to the class 0f 2010. The "plan" is to add a prospect that projects at the tackle position. SpartanMag.com asked Franklin about his thoughts on visit Michigan State and his position of preference.

"It was real nice there," Franklin said. "I liked the atmosphere and the fans, it was high intensity. The game was well played by both teams. I prefer to play left tackle."

Cardinal Mooney is one of the top programs in Ohio and they are expected to challenge for another State Championship this fall. That fact will likely influence his time-table for a decision.

"I am going to wait until after my season to set up my official visits," he said.

Based on scholarship numbers the Spartans will likely add only one more offensive line prospect so it could come down to a situation where the prospect that officially visit first will have an inside track to becoming a member of the Green and White.

As of right now Coach Dantonio and his staff are being very selective about. Franklin and fellow Ohio prospect Skyler Schofner are the only two offensive line recruits that not only hold Michigan State scholarship offers, but have also been on campus this fall.

Spartanmag.com will continue to follow the recruitment of Franklin over the coming weeks. Coach Pat Narduzzi, who has strong family ties to the Youngstown area, serves as the primary recruiter of Franklin for Michigan State. Though Franklin remains "open" in his recruitment, the high-level of interest by the Spartans is certainly a positive factor.
