Summer Hoops Roundup: Former Terps excel in NBA Summer League
Melo Trimble makes most of opportunity
It took some time, but rookie point guard Melo Trimble finally showed the Philadelphia 76ers brass why he was considered one of the top point guards in the country during his time at Maryland.
Trimble scored 13 points, adding a couple of steals and a rebound in 13 minutes of action as the 76ers fell to the Boston Celtics 88-83 on Tuesday night. He had his shot working, as he went 4-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also knocked down both free throw attempts.
With top pick Markelle Fultz suffering an ankle sprain that will keep him out for the remainder of games in Las Vegas, additional minutes have opened up at the point guard position.
The Philadelphia 76ers next game in Las Vegas is Wednesday, July 12 at 10:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
Robert Carter Jr., Diamond Stone make their cases
After spending last season overseas, Robert Carter Jr. is currently with the Devner Nuggets summer league team and had a strong debut in Las Vegas, going for 17 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal in just 23 minutes of action on July 7.
Carter went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, with his biggest highlight of the game being a made three from half court as time expired at the end of the third quarter.
In three appearances in Las Vegas, Carter Jr. is averaging 11.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, while averaging just over 18 minutes of action in each of those contests.
The Nuggets will play the Houston Rockets on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
Diamond Stone seems to have settled in nicely with his new team after being traded from the L.A. Clippers to the Atlanta Hawks recently.
Stone, who played in just seven games for the Clippers last season, had an impressive Las Vegas debut with the Hawks, going for 11 points, five rebounds and a block in just 14 minutes of action in an 84-82 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.
The following night, Stone went for 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and a block in just 18 minutes of action.
Following the loss of Paul Millsap via free agency, the Hawks have a depleted front court and Diamond Stone could very likely find himself firmly in their big man rotation.
Huerter wins Bronze, Tomaic shines versus USA
Maryland teammates Kevin Huerter and Josh Tomaic squared off in Cairo, Egypt as Team USA faced Spain in the bronze medal game of the FIBA U19 World Cup.
Kevin Huerter scored four points and added five rebounds in a 96-72 win over the Spaniards to help USA to bronze.
Tomaic was solid all-around in a losing effort for Spain, finishing with nine points, six rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot.
The 6-foot-9 Tomaic, who redshirted for the Terps last season, finished the tournament averaging 6.6 points and 5 rebounds per game.
Top Terps target Silvio De Sousa finished his World Cup tournament on a high note for Angola, scoring a game-high 27 points while adding 21 rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal in a 56-54 consolation win over Korea. It was De Sousa’s third double-double of the tournament as he finished with the top overall rebounding average among participants (13.1 rpg) while also finishing third in scoring average (17.1 ppg).
Cowan makes Kenner League debut
Local summer leagues are underway and it is not uncommon to see some of your favorite Terps participating, especially in the Kenner League at Georgetown.
The first Maryland Terrapin to debut in Kenner League this summer is former Hoyas ball boy Anthony Cowan. The rising sophomore point guard finished with seven points, five assists, two rebounds and a steal for the Darren McClinton All-Stars in a 44-43 win over Premier Athletics on the opening day of play.
