COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- With a couple of cupcakes under their belts to start the season, the Terps (2-0) are set to host Butler (2-0) of the Big East on Wednesday night as part of this season’s Gavitt Tipoff Games.

The Terps enter the game undefeated, having won their lone exhibition game at Xfinity Center by 44 points before rolling to a 53 point victory in their regular season home opener last Sunday night.

Butler, also undefeated and coming off of a Sweet Sixteen appearance a season ago, will present the Terps with arguably their toughest test of the nonconference schedule. As such, Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon expects his team and fans alike to be ready for this game.

“I think the players are excited, I think the fans are excited,” Turgeon said on Tuesday. “I imagine our building will be pretty hyped up tomorrow.”

Although the Bulldogs return several key contributors from a season ago, they are now led by former Butler player and assistant coach LaVall Jordan. The first-year coach should be familiar with Maryland, as he spent 2016 as an assistant at Michigan under current Wolverines head coach John Beilein.

Still, Turgeon’s biggest concern about playing Butler early in the season is the fact that the Bulldogs took a trip to Spain in August and therefor have had more time to gel as a team.

“The only reservation I have is that Butler went on a summer tour,” Turgeon said. “It’s a new coach, but they went on a summer tour. They look like they’ve played seven or eight games. That’s the only reservation I have. I think they’re just a little bit further along than we are because we’ve only played two games. We weren’t together in the summer. But with that said, yes, I’m anxious to see what we’re really about and how we match up. They’re a physical team, they don’t have a bad player that they play. Every player is good and they are well coached so it’s a challenge for us.”

Returning for Butler this year is senior forward Kelan Martin, who is currently averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds per game. At 6-foot-7, 220 pounds, Martin can score inside and out and is a physical presence on the glass. The Terps understand just how good Martin is and actually liken him to one of their own.

“Martin, he’s versatile, he’s a lot like Justin [Jackson] honestly,” said Terps sophomore guard Kevin Huerter. “He can play both the three and the four, he’s really good offensively. He’s a big, strong body. He kind of reminds me of Jamel Artis from last year of Pittsburgh, kind of playing similarly the same way. He’s versatile, he’s going to be a matchup problem but for as tough as it is will be for us to guard him, we gotta make him guard us too and possibly get him into foul trouble.”

While ultimately the goal is to win the game, the hope is also that this kind of test this early in the season will prepare the Terps for the rigors of conference play, which begins in just a few weeks.

“It will help us a lot, especially being this early in the season,” said Huerter. “It is something you can learn from. I think every team, as the season goes on, they can say they have gotten a lot better. So the quicker you test yourselves against a team that will probably look ahead and think they will be in the NCAA Tournament anytime, that’s probably good for you.”
