WBB: Terps blows past Texas Southern in San Juan

GUAYNABO, P.R. -  The No. 7 Maryland women's basketball team controlled both ends of the floor from the tip Saturday in a 100-59 rout of Texas Southern in the San Juan Shootout Friday in Puerto Rico.

Preseason All-American Alyssa Thomas led Maryland (6-1) with 23 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double in the Terps' first seven games. Freshman Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added a new career-high 17, while senior Katie Rutan notched 14, all in the second half. Senior Alicia DeVaughn scored 11. Point guards Brene Moseley and Lexie Brownhad nine and eight assists, respectively.

Maryland controlled the game from the tip, leading by more than 20 at the break. The Tigers (3-3) chipped into the lead early in the second half, but after a timeout called by head coach Brenda Frese, the Terrapins went on a12-0 run to answer. Maryland held TSU's Jazzmin Parker, the nation's leading scorer with 28.0 points per game, to 23 points, with just one field goal in the second half.

"Really, really glad to see our production on both ends of the floor," Frese said. "Everyone contributed and that's what you want to see at this time of year.  Really proud of our point guards with 17 assists. We felt like we controlled game the whole time. Credit Texas Southern because they came out strong in the second half. I was really proud of how we responded to that."

Thomas and DeVaughn combined for Maryland's first seven points and a 7-2 lead. The Tigers called a timeout at 17:55 down 6-0 and came out to find a brief offensive rhythm.

A three by the Tigers' Parker at 13:43 gave them a 10-9 lead, which Walker-Kimbrough answered with a long a two to take the lead back for good. She and Thomas led an 11-0 run over the next few minutes for an eight-point lead.

Brionna Jones hit two free throws to make it 22-14 at 10:37, then the Terps went on an 18-4 run for 20-point advantage with six minutes left in the half.

Maryland led 54-30 at the break, but the Tigers came out of the break hungry and went on an 11-5 run to cut the Terps' lead to 19. A timeout by Frese at 16:34 sparked the Terps on both ends, as they went on a 12-0 run to lead by 30.

Maryland hit the 100-point mark for the first time since a 108-33 win over Delaware State on Dec. 8, 2011 in College Park.

The Terrapins shot 60 percent from the field and hit nine threes. They also controlled the glass, 42-20.
