Maryland football co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Saturday morning in Florida, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The former Texas A&M and Arizona head coach was arrested at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday on US Highway 301 in Tampa, Florida. The Terps were on a bye week. There was no crash or damage to property.

According to the arrest report, Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test, which could result in a one year suspension of his driver’s license. He pleaded not guilty and waved arraignment. The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail.

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley hired Sumlin as co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach last February. Sumlin had spent the past 15 years as a head coach, with stops at Houston (2008-2011), Texas A&M (2012-2017) and Arizona (2018-2020) followed by a brief stint with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL in 2022.
