Maybe the biggest shock of all is a pair of true freshmen in Tyrell Pigrome and Max Bortenschlager backing up senior Perry Hills at quarterback. With senior Caleb Rowe sitting out, Pigrome took a large number of snaps in the Terps' open practice at Maryland Stadium Aug. 20 with Bortenschlager also getting some reps.

At running back, sophomore Ty Johnson will get the start with senior Wes Brown suspended for the first three games of the season. Fifth-year Virginia Tech transfer Tre Edmunds is listed as the primary backup with Kenneth Goins and true freshman Jake Funk also listed in the two-deep.

In another surprise, Funk is also listed in the two-deep at safety on defense. Fellow freshman Tino Ellis of DeMatha is also listed in the two-deep on both sides of the ball as a backup at wide receiver and cornerback.

Already expected to play in all phases of the game, senior Will Likely is listed as a starter at nickel corner as well as a co-starter at slot wide receiver along with senior DeAndre Lane. Florida transfer J.C. Jackson and senior Alvin Hill are slotted to start at the outside corner positions.

Along the offensive line, former walk-on Mike Minter beat out JuJuan Dulaney for the starting left guard spot. Michael Dunn, Brendan Moore, Maurice Shelton and Damian Prince make up the remaining five starters up front.

Along the defensive line, senior Roman Braglio will start at end while Cavon Walker and Kingsley Opara earned starting roles at defensive tackle and nose guard, respectively. Junior BUCK Jesse Aniebonam beat out sophomore Melvin Keihn in one of the more closely watched position battles and could be in store for a breakout season.
