Maryland has hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive backs coach Jon Hoke to be its new defensive coordinator, according to multiple sources.
Hoke, 62, will replace Andy Buh, who spent the past three years coaching Maryland’s defense but was not retained by new head coach Mike Locksley. Buh recently accepted a role as Rutgers’ new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Hoke, who is the older brother of former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke, has spent the majority of the last 15 years coaching defensive backs in the NFL, with stops at Houston, Chicago and Tampa Bay, but he has also coached in the college ranks at seven different schools, including stints at Power Five programs such as Missouri, Florida and South Carolina.
In total, Hoke brings 36 years of coaching experience to the table with his arrival in College Park, where he is likely to run the same 4-3 scheme that he used in his last stint as a defensive coordinator when he was with Steve Spurrier’s staff in South Carolina during the 2015 season.
The Ohio native and Ball State alum will take over a Terps defense that finished ninth in the Big Ten in scoring defense and fifth in pass defense. Some of his top returning talent happens to be in the secondary, including defensive backs Antoine Brooks and Tino Ellis.
Hoke has some experience coaching talented defensive backs from the DMV, having coached Bucs cornerback and Upper Marlboro (Md.) Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School graduate , Ryan Smith, in Tampa Bay over the past three years.
Locksley’s staff in College Park is starting to round into form. With eight of 10 positions already filled, the Terps are just in need of a defensive line coach and linebackers coach at this point.
