Getting to know: Jared Nickens

With freshmen now on campus and participating in summer workouts and playing pick up, TerrapinSportsReport.com catches up with Maryland's newcomers to give you a chance to get to know each prospect a little better on a personal level. Today, we speak with freshman wing Jared Nickens.
Nickens, who hails from New Jersey, played his final two seasons of high school basketball at Westtown School just outside of Philadelphia. Nickens held offers from the likes of Miami, Oklahoma, SMU and Wake Forest. He will come in as a freshman with a chance to have an immediate impact with the offseason departure of Nick Faust. Here, he opens up so that fans can get to know a bit more about him on a personal level.

"Michael Jordan"
What is the best basketball team you've ever seen play?
"Either between the Lakers from 2000-2003 or the '96 Bulls"
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
"Listen to music, talk to my friends, most of the time I just work out though."
What is your favorite food?
"Bacon"
What is your favorite TV show?
"Martin"
Do you have a favorite movie?
"Space Jam or Like Mike"
Favorite song or musical artist?
"Fabolous"
What person(s) dead or alive would you most like to sit down and have dinner with?
"Brandon Jennings; I just like his swag."
Do you have a nickname?
"J-Nick"
What is something that very few people know about you?
"I like to paint. I like to paint anything that comes to my mind. I draw it out first and then I just paint over it."
Do you know what you'd like to major in?
"Undecided"
Most memorable in your basketball career so far?
"Winning Daily Local Player of the Year this past year, my senior season."
Do you have a pregame ritual or routine?
"Just listen to music, get stretched, and I get my ankles taped before every game."
What was the deciding factor in you picking Maryland?
"Coach Turgeon and the way he recruited me. I really felt like I was wanted at the program."
What was your favorite part of the recruiting process? Best Memory?
"The visits, just interacting with college kids and seeing how they act and being able to see what I'm going to be taking a part of in the future."
What was your favorite part of the recruiting process?
"All of the phone calls from all of the schools in general. Some of them didn't bother me but some of them did."
What was your favorite or most unique part of your visits for Maryland?
"Just the bound between the players. It's like a brotherhood."
Runner Up? What school would you have chosen if Maryland wasn't an option?
"Miami"
Did you make friend with any current MD players or other incoming freshmen during the recruiting process?
"I'm cool with Dez. Recently we just had five transfers and I was pretty cool with all of them, too. But I'm close with everybody coming in. Me, Melo, Dion, and Trayvon all talk in a group chat, so we're pretty close already."
What number to you plan on wearing at Maryland?
"I'm looking to get 11."
What is your goal for next season?
"Just to contribute and help the team win games."
What games or venues are you most looking forward to next season?
"I mean, we're in the Big Ten, so I'm excited for every venue."
Any final words for Maryland fans?
"Nothing about me in particular, but just look out for the whole squad."
