Kevin Huerter commits

After hosting him on campus for an official visit over the weekend, Maryland received a commitment from one of its top 2016 hoops targets Sept. 7.
Shenendehowa (N.Y.) four-star shooting guard Kevin Huerter is now the second member of the Terps 2016 recruiting class, joining St. John's College High School's Anthony Cowan for what appears to be Maryland's backcourt of the future.

"[Maryland coaches] see me as a combo [guard], able to come off screens and create and find people, but also let other people find me and hit shots," Huerter told TSR earlier this month after his unofficial visit to College Park. "Just a guy able to do multiple things."
Maryland's coaching staff, particularly head coach Mark Turgeon and assistant coach Dustin Clark, have been working on building a relationship with Huerter for quite some time and did a good job of making him feel like a priority throughout the process.
"I'm very close with coach Clark and I feel I have a great relationship with [Maryland], as good as any one else," Huerter also said after his unofficial visit.
One other part of his unofficial visit that had stuck out to Huerter was his conversation with Terps strength coach Kyle Tarp.
Hueter said he was very impressed with Tarp and believed he would know how to get his body ready for the next level.
"[Tarp] just explained that they can do a lot of things and showed me before and after pictures of current players and what they look like after being apart of the program and his guidance," Huerter said.
Huerter had already taken an official visit to Villanova the week prior to coming to College Park and had other official visits set for Michigan and Notre Dame later this month. Those will most likely be unnecessary now.
So what can Terps fans expect from Huerter?
Well, at 6-foot-5, Hueter has ideal size for a combo guard and although his primary spot will be at the two, he also has the handles and the basketball IQ to bring the ball up the floor if asked to.
His size also allows him to rebound better than most guards. He is tough and not afraid to take contact in the paint.
He displayed great leadership ability this spring and summer on the AAU circuit while being the standout player for Albany City Rocks.
While the knocks on Hueter are that his defense could improve and he's not an elite athlete, versatility, size and leadership are all things that Maryland can expect from its newest commitment, making it a good Labor Day for the Terps.
Maryland still has its eyes on some marquee 2016 targets to match up with Cowan and Huerter. Five-stars Wenyen Gabriel and Josh Jackson are both firmly on the Terps radar along with several other impressive four-star recruits. A commitment from either Gabriel or Jackson, or even a combination of some of the other targets, could make 2016 a very special class for Turgeon and his staff.
