Maryland sophomore point guard Melo Trimble will test the NBA waters, entering his name in the draft, but will not hire an agent, the school announced on Monday.
Trimble, an AP Honorable Mention All-American in 2016, led the Terps in scoring (14.8 ppg), assists (4.9 apg), free throw percentage (.868) and steals (44) during this past season.
“I am looking forward to taking advantage of this opportunity and entering my name in the NBA draft,” Trimble said in a statement released by the athletic department. “I am excited that the new rules allow me the chance to go through this process.”
Under the new rules, players may enter their name in the draft and can workout at the NBA Draft Combine as well as for individual NBA teams in order to gather as much information as possible before then making a decision on whether to stay in the draft or return to college.
The deadline to make that decision this season is May 25.
“Melo will go through the draft process, which will provide him a stronger understanding of where he could potentially be selected,” Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said in a statement. “Melo has worked very hard and we will continue to support and guide him throughout this process.”
During Trimble's two seasons in College Park, the Terps have gone 55-16 and earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009-2010. The Terps also made their first appearance in the Sweet Sixteen since 2003 this past season.
