Defensive Tackle

6-foot-2, 309 pounds

Washington, D.C.

St. John’s College High

WHAT HE DID - Spence transferred back home to St. John’s for his senior season after spending some time in The Sunshine State at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy. As a junior at IMG, Spence played in six games and recorded 17 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and a half sack.

WHAT HE WON - Spence is a three-star prospect by Rivals.com. He’s ranked as the 36th defensive tackle in the country and fourth player coming out of the nation’s capital for the 2017 class. Spence’s St. John’s team went 8-4 in his senior season and lost to Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic in the WCAC championship game.

WHERE HE VISITED - Spence was a four-star back when he committed to Maryland last April and still has some of the highest upside in the Terps’ 2017 class. He took official visits to Florida, Kentucky, Penn State, and Maryland. Some believed the Gators would be able to reel Spence back to Florida after a late push, but he remained pledged to the Terps.

QUOTABLE - On why he chose Maryland:

"When I visited with coach (DJ) Durkin I felt like he was the right fit for me. I met with coach (Mike) London multiple times and got to know him. He really took the time out to really get to know me as a person first before a football player. My uncle (Larry Stewart) also went to Maryland. He was a first-team All-ACC lineman in 1979. I kind of want to follow in his footsteps."
