For the past three seasons, former Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year and Under Armour All-American Dwayne Haskins has led the Potomac (Md.) Bullis School offense at quarterback.
Waiting in the wings has been 2018 quarterback Tucker Strachan, the heir apparent to replace Haskins under center next season at Bullis.
Strachan is ready to take the reins after watching and learning from the future Ohio St. Buckeye.
“Bullis has been a great experience for me, playing behind Dwayne [Haskins],” said Strachan. “I learned a lot from him and I’m just excited to take over next season.
“I learned a lot from him, off the field stuff, like social media and stuff. And basically to let the plays come to you, you don’t have to force it every time—Dwayne helped me out a lot.”
The name Strachan should be a familiar one for Terp fans as Tucker’s uncle Tim is a longtime member of the Maryland Sports Radio Network football broadcast team.
Strachan comes from strong quarterback bloodlines, uncle Tim having been a star quarterback at famed DeMatha Catholic High School while his father Bret was a quarterback for the Tar Heels of North Carolina.
Strachan hears about the Maryland football program from his uncle.
“He says good things, a lot of good things,” Strachan said. “He keeps me posted on recruits and their offense and what they’re looking to do and stuff. I’m definitely interested.”
Although he only played on JV last season while backing up Haskins on the varsity, Strachan has already begun to hear from colleges, including Maryland.
“A little bit, stuff in the mail, letting me know when stuff is like spring games,” Strachan said of college interest. “I was going to go see Maryland’s spring game, something came up and I couldn’t, but I’m going to reschedule that.
“I’ve been up to North Carolina, I’ve visited them. I hear from Boston College, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State a little bit and that’s it for right now.”
Standing at 6-foot-3, Strachan’s quarterback coach Chris Baucia of the Quarterback Factory thinks he is very similar physically to another quarterback he worked with at the same age-Stanford’s Kevin Hogan.
Next fall Strachan hopes to show everyone, including college coaches, that he can lead Bullis to an IAC championship as well as play at the next level.
“I’m hoping to show that I can play beyond this level, that I can play at the next level. I think my teammates help me out with that, Coach Baucia helps me out with that and my coaches at Bullis help me out with that.”
