Three-star North Carolina RB Javon Leake commits to Maryland

Maryland has been listed among the top schools for 2017 Greensboro (N.C.) Page three-star running back Javon Leake for several months now, and while in College Park at a recruiting cookout July 30, the 6-foot-1, 192-pound runner committed to the Terps.

Leake told TSR back in February, shortly after receiving his Terps offer, that Maryland was in his top four along with North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. At the time, he said the Gamecocks were leading the pack, but after visiting College Park in June and then again for the cookout, he ultimately decided to join the Terps backfield.

Maryland has now added two three-star running backs to its 2017 class in one day with Oxon Hill (Md.) Potomac power runner Tayon Fleet-Davis committing earlier in the afternoon. Leake becomes the fourteenth pledge to the Terps’ 2017 class and the second from the Tar Heel State along with kicker Jonathan Doerer.

As opposed to Fleet-Davis, Leake is more of a shifty back that will bust runs outside. However, Leake still has enough power to do some work between the tackles.

Leake bonded right off the bat with his primary recruiter and Terps special teams coordinator Pete Lembo, who is very familiar with North Carolina from his time coaching at Elon University. Leake called Lembo a “great coach” in his last conversation with TSR and said he has heard nothing but good things about him from one of the coaches at his high school that worked under Lembo at Elon.

Besides Maryland, Leake also paid unofficial visits to UNC, N.C. State, South Carolina and Tennessee.
